Chapter 11

We drove back to town and parked between the actors’ trailers and Crystal Park. The clouds were thick overhead, muting the sunlight to a gauzy glow. As I got out of the car, I half-expected to see Crazy Cathy nearby.

There were a couple moms with their kids in the park, and some crew members milling around the trailers. A few townspeople walked along the sidewalk heading further down Main Street, but no purple haired stalkers in sight.

Kenny swiveled his head around like she was about to jump him. “I don’t see her. Do you?”

“No,” I said. “Maybe we just missed her.”

Bandit growled. Figures. She leaves right before I get to bite her.

“What’s he growling at?” Kenny craned his neck around. “Does he sense something?”

“No,” I said. “He just knows we’re looking for someone. Makes him antsy. Come on, let’s look around.”

We spent the next ten minutes walking through the park and down Main Street, but Crazy Cathy was nowhere to be found. By the time we made it back to my car, I figured she was long gone.

“Well,” I said. “Maybe we should get back to the set. I’m guessing she’ll be close to wherever Philip is. That’s our best chance of running into her.”

Bandit barked. That’s when we pounce.

Easy. No pouncing on people until I say. There could be more than one woman with purple hair.

You’re no fun.

“Good thinking,” Kenny said.

Twenty yards away, Jenna Vinton walked down the sidewalk, headed further into town.

“Hey.” I pointed to her. “There’s Jenna. Let’s go talk to her about Philip.”

“Okay, but don’t tell her I dug up all that celebrity gossip about her.”

We hustled over as Jenna walked down Main Street.

“Jenna,” I called out.

She stopped and turned back to us. “Oh. Hi. What’s going on?”

In a few strides I was right beside her. “I was hoping to ask you a few quick questions for an article. I’m the reporter for the Crystal Chronicle. The local paper here.”

Her brow furrowed. “I thought you worked for Kenny’s agency.”

“He does.” Kenny gave a nervous grin.

“I do.” I smiled. “I work two jobs. Gotta keep bread on the table, right?”

She glanced from me to Kenny. “I suppose.”

“Anyways,” I said. “I’m doing an article on the movie, and our readers love the celebrity gossip that surrounds these productions.”

“They do?” she said.

“I don’t.” Kenny shook his head. “It’s nobody’s business.”

I flashed him a dark look. “Yes, well, you know fans. They watch someone on the screen and they want to know all about them. Stories get spread around. In fact, there’s even rumors you and Philip used to date. Is that true?”

Her face tightened. “I don’t like to talk about my personal life. I’m not even in the movie. You should be talking to the cast.”

“Well, Philip is one of the main stars. He’s got lots of admirers that want to know if he’s available, you know?”

She sighed. “Well, why don’t you ask Aubrey? I’m sure she’ll have something to say. I’m not much for gossip. Anyway, I need to get back.
